Weipa is the largest town just south of the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula and has a history as a mining community tracing back to the early sixties. By 1963, the first commercial shipment of the ore was dispatched from the port of Weipa and has continued right through to today. With the expansion of mining operations, Rio Tinto (formerly Comalco) have built and rented out accommodation facilities to its employees over decades, as well as opening up freehold areas in the town to enable residents to build or purchase their individually owned homes.

The immense bauxite deposits found in the area make this natural resource the Port of Weipa’s primary export, along with cattle. Today Weipa is famed not only as the site of the largest bauxite mine in the world, but also as Queensland’s barramundi fishing capital, attracting more and more tourists annually making the trek to the tip of the Cape York.

The town is governed by the Weipa Town Authority. The officials of the Town Office serve in the capacity of the local council and are in charge of managing town operations, planning, water supply, public roads, establishments, facilities, maintenance and sanitation.

The Weipa region has experienced strong growth over recent years based around the development of the Rio Tinto mining operations. The most recent announcement of the $2.6B Rio Tinto Amrun project plus the anticipated $40M neighbouring Bauxite Hills project all point towards continuing demand and growth for the area.
